It takes up to a year to complete the course as it is very detailed and structured. Phenomenal results hence the name But very, very expensive when compared to other approaches.

Much of the successful material they offer can be picked up elsewhere for much less but with more searching required. Why do that? Thank you very much for the valuable information!

The prices are quiet high for me though, I'll wait for sales! Memrise is about vocabulary. An option exists for users to submit their own memes for each word for others to look at.

There is no instruction on developing your own memes and why that is infinitely better than using someone else's.

There is no discussion of the science of using memes. No effort is made to assist in recalling and rehearsing images.

No discussion of how to categorize connected images into a framework that assists in recall. No effort is put into showing how to construct an image from your own mind that is very memorable, carries information like gender and number, as well as the sound, spelling, and meaning or the word; and how to create those images in seconds.

Advanced students of the kinds of courses I am talking about can memorize the order of a deck of cards with one look in about a minute or so.

Memorize in the sense of if you ask them to identify a particular card from your self selected starting point, they can list the cards in sequence going forward, backward, skipping cards in whatever fashion you choose.

Magnetic Memory offered by Anthony Metivier starts with four free lessons that outline the basics of his approach as applied to learning a foreign language.

That is sufficient for students to do research on how to advance on their own. For fifteen dollars on a Udemy sale, you can get his full course with thirty or so of his lessons.

For about twenty five bucks you can get his book on Amazon which covers his method thoroughly. He also has an advanced class for those who want to compete in memory championships.

Fluent Forever by Gabriel Wyner has the same kind of basic approach with less emphasis on constructing a system for recall and rehearsal but more on memorizing pronunciation.

This is not an issue in French and German so much but certainly is in many other languages. His course includes the ipa phonetic alphabet which is connected to his examples, pronunciation trainers, a six hundred and fifty word starter list complete with pronunciation aids for each word which are collated into research based visual frameworks for faster assimilation into the students working vocabulary.

A completely different approach is that of Lucas Kern. His course on learning German is not technical at all. He doesn't talk about images so much as he induces the student to generate them spontaneously.

His use of songs, stories and jokes is delivered in such an evocative manner that students quickly go from translating into English and just form the ideas and connections directly.

The ultimate goal of students is to be able to deal with a foreign language without translating. It is an amazing experience for a novice student to realize they aren't translating the voice of the speaker but simply understanding what he is saying.

These and other memory development programs are available for less than the cost of one month's internet connection fee. No need for Memrise to teach all that because it is a vocabulary builder using translation exercises as a means of instruction.

No more, no less. It examples, definitions and memes are provided by users. It is free. By itself it is useful. Applied in connection with enhanced memory techniques it is much more useful.

I haven't the faintest idea why people trying to learn a foreign language are downvoting listing very cheap ways to accelerate student's language acquisition.

The original post was about remembering gender. Look at any of these kind of courses and remembering gender will simply disappear as a problem.

At least, it has for me. Get yourself on the Udemy mailing list. They send me notices of multiple courses that are on sale for ten, twenty dollars.

It only takes a few seconds to look through and see if you're interested in any particular course. Here the indirect receiver of the action is Switzerland?

But what action? I find it confusing. Or is it some word in the sentence that implies the dative case?. There are seven prepositions that are always followed by a phrase in the dative case no matter what.

Aus is one of them, and the other six are bei, mit, nach, seit, von and zu. Here it is the object of a preposition aus so its not a receiver of an action at all.

It must take the appropriate inflection for that preposition in these circumstances dative. Different prepositions require the inflections for different cases and you just have to learn which to use in each case.

Is there a logical reason for why it is "the Switzerland" in German? For instance, it's "the USA" because you're referring to specific states.

Is there a smaller unit contained by "Schweiz? Probably because the full name is "die Schweizerische Eidgenossenschaft" the Swiss Confederation.

Switzerland is a confederation of 26 cantons states. The Netherlands is called so because it consists of i think 4 many states , including Holland.

Holland is more or less equivalent to Netherland , but the 'the' comes only for the Netherlands as it has more than one state.

The 'the' of 'the Netherlands' comes from back when it still was one state consisting of the modern Benelux, only years ago.

Before that, Holland was the most powerful province, and people from the Dutch Republic didn't identify themselves by the country but the province they lived in.

Whence most people know the Netherlands - incorrectly - as 'Holland'. The sentence I see reads "Er ist aus der Schweiz". Is this an error? Switzerland is feminine, no?

In the dative case the die changes to der. I have a hundred day streak as of the time this is posted.

It is accomplished by making it a practice to always devote part of everyday to spending some time on Duo. This is going to be a challenge at the end of this month because I am moving from North America to central Europe.

I hope it can be done. You know polish my mom is polish but my dad is american well i am to but i live in switzerland.

In german, couldnt you say " Er kommt aus der Schweiz. Because of the preposition "aus" meaning "from" in this case, and makes the noun "die Schweiz" Dative.

I just translated "die Schweiz", but it's not correct.. Aus is a dative preposition however, so in this sentence die Schweiz is in the dative case and so becomes der Schweiz.

A bit like how Frankreich is the 'Realm' of the Franks. Although Austria is a republic I suppose, comprised of 'states' no one calls it "Der Österreichisch Republik".

I guess Germany is much the same in that respect, Bayern appears to act like it control it's own area, but some rules and laws of central government filter down.

Many of Germany's institutions like education are not so Federal, or weren't until recently, so each area governs and acts differently.

See Christian's reply below for a correction, and better explanation. I'm sure you knew this already, but just to clarify, Bavaria is not actually autonomous, at least not more than any of the other 15 federated states.

Bavaria's official name is "Freistaat Bayern", but that's just a name. There's no special constitutional status that comes with it.

The same goes for Saxony Freistaat Sachsen. Power is shared between the federal government and the state governments. In that respect, Germany is pretty similar to the United States.

I'll edit my original post as to not mislead :. Is it 'die Schweiz' because Switzerland is a feminine word or is it because it's plural? On that note, is the above sentence dative?

That would not work because you are paraphrasing. Ok, my great grandpa is from Switzerland Marriage Wedding at the the register office, choice of last name, legal and economic consequences.

It also doesn't help with anything other than gender. For reasons that mystify me, people have downvoted my description of popular, successful alternatives.

I don't care about being downvoted in the slightest but I do care about the fact that now those alternatives are hidden from the view of students.

I've always been curious about what my last name means--"Capeder"?? Funny old world Duolingo just put a comment up to help me with this one, explaining that the der Schweiz was a special article because it is an indirect recipient of the action of the verb.

But how is Switzerland indirectly receiving action here? I've seen it referred to "die Schweiz" and "der Schweiz" when referring to the country.

Is there a reason for why it switches? It switches because of the cases. Since "aus" requires Dative, it changes to "der Schweiz".

Some countries are federations which is reflected in the name of the country. Some do not have that in their title.

You just have to know what the country is actually called in your target language which might well be different from what it is called in English.

So it is the United States but not the China or the Canada. That might not be the same in other languages. You must not translate word for word. In English "Switzerland " does not have a definite article "the", but in German there must be a definite article.

The English is lazy and we have missed a lot of what is a correct term - just look at all of the far away areas like India and what not, Bombay is now returned to the more correct Mumbai.

The ruling English at the time must have messed up the translation and just used their 'superiority' to determine what a place should actually be called - a bit wrong is an understatement.

Be sure to watch for the case changes as well, as in the Nominative just saying "Die Schweiz" means the Swiss confederation. But if you were to say "he comes from Switzerland" - "Er kommt aus der Schweiz" as it's now Dative.

It'll either be Der or Die depending on case. In English, Switzerland doesn't take the article even though by the logic of country naming, in English, it should.

Switzerland must be capitalized in English and does not take the article "the". I suppose you could say "the Swiss Confederation", but most English or American people would not know you were talking about Switzerland.

Swiss is a nationality, not a place though. I would not say "He is from French", but rather, "He is from France". Get started. July 18, February 25, August 17, January 8, There's a difference between an error and not accepting a recent trend.
